Why I joined OpenPhone

I’m thrilled to be joining OpenPhone as the Head of Sales. I’m joining this exciting company after spending seven years at Pinterest, where I focused on scaling the mid-market and small and medium-sized business (SMB) sales organizations. For the last four years,  I led Pinterest’s North America SMB sales team, taking a nascent sales organization and growing it into a 400+ person team that delivered over $400 million in annual recurring revenue. I began my sales journey in adtech at Pandora as part of the mid-market and enterprise sales teams.

So why OpenPhone?

There were several factors that influenced my decision to join the OpenPhone team – people, product, and market opportunity.

People 

Nothing is more important than joining a team that inspires me. Over the last few months, I spent time with OpenPhone founders, Daryna and Mahyar, and I was genuinely impressed with everything they and their team have accomplished in such a short period of time.

OpenPhone has built a culture on values that resonate strongly with me — I can best describe it as “be curious.” Truly personal and organizational growth comes from always learning and challenging yourself, and thinking and acting outside of your comfort zones. For people who know me, this is something near and dear to me. I have a mantra that I embody: “If you don’t make yourself feel uncomfortable every day, you’re not doing your job.” 

Product

The elegance and simplicity of the OpenPhone product immediately impressed me. No company or product has placed customer communication as the starting point for managing workflows. Until now.

From the ease of getting started, to establishing boundaries between personal and professional communication, to providing a framework to manage communication workflows, OpenPhone is already disrupting the antiquated telephone industry. There are more than 20,000 happy OpenPhone customers, and OpenPhone is consistently rated the #1 business phone solution on G2.

Market

I believe there is a significant, untapped market opportunity ahead of us, especially within the traditional clunky telephone ecosystem. In the last ten years, there has been an unmatched pace of innovation in collaborative applications, but phone systems for small businesses have remained unchanged.

Within just the US, OpenPhone has a market opportunity of $15 billion in annual revenue. There are 28 million SMBs in the US that produce 50% of the country’s GDP, and employ 60 million people. Every one of these businesses is a potential OpenPhone customer and the opportunity is right there in front of us.

On a personal note, I am a native of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. My partner and I moved to the Bay Area 13 years ago, and we recently moved to the suburbs with our two amazing daughters and eight-year-old pups. In my personal time I’m hanging with my family, working with my hands (cooking, tending to a garden, building coffee tables, etc), hiking, and running. I hope to see you on the trails!
